The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council

The Annual Meeting of the District Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Surrey took place on the 23rd March 2019 at the Masonic Hall, Croydon, Surrey.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council A special thanks goes to Comp. Bob Wooloff who manned the signing in table, as well as acting as the District Grand Steward at the last minute. All the more appreciated as Comp. Bob was only Chosen as a Select Master at the last meeting of Pride of Surrey Council.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council By 10.45 everyone was seated in the Temple. Just after 10.50 the Companions were called to order to receive the distinguished guests, including Right Illustrious Companions and past members of the District Executive.

Finally, the entire meeting was called to order by Ill.Comp. Simon McCarthy, the District Grand Director of Ceremonies, to receive the District Grand Officers of the year accompanying the District Grand PCW, Ill.Comp. Peter Kipps; the Deputy District Grand Master, Ill.Comp. Jack Love; and the District Grand Master, R.Ill.Comp. David Blackburn led by the District Grand Sword Bearer and followed by the District Grand Standard Bearer.

District Grand Council was opened in due form by the District Grand Master who was saluted with seven times three under the direction of the District Grand Director of Ceremonies.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies entered and announced that the Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master, His Hon. Ian Douglas Gavin Alexander, QC, was without and demanded admission into District Grand Council. The Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master entered and was warmly received by the District Grand Master. He was then saluted with nine times three under the direction of the Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. The Companions stood to order to honour the memory of those Companions who had been called to Higher Service since the last Annual Meeting.

The business of District Grand Council commenced with the District Grand Master individually welcoming the many representatives of other Districts and Masonic Orders.

During the meeting the Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master was pleased to congratulate V.Ill.Comp. John Finlayson on his Promotion to Past Grand Lecturer and invest him with his collar. The Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master said how pleased he was to be able to attend the meeting as he and John had been friends for many years.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council After approving the minutes of the previous meeting, which were available in the Order of Proceedings and on the Provincial web site, the roll call was made of District Grand Officers and Councils in the District. The R.Ill. District Grand Master thanked Ill.Comp. Jack Love for his support for the District over the past years and announced that he was appointing Ill.Comp. Peter Kipps as Deputy District Grand Master. The District Grand Director of Ceremonies, Ill.Comp. Simon McCarthy, formed a procession to escort the Deputy District Grand Master Designate into District Grand Council.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council Ill.Comp. Peter Kipps was presented, obligated and invested as the Deputy District Grand Master and took his place in District Grand Council. The District Grand Director of Ceremonies called the Companions of the District of Surrey to Order and Ill.Comp. Peter Kipps was proclaimed as Deputy District Grand Master and saluted with five times three.

The R.Ill. District Grand Master announced that he was appointing Ill.Comp. David Thompson as District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work. The District Grand Director of Ceremonies formed a procession to escort the District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work Designate into District Grand Council.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council Ill.Comp. David Thompson was presented, obligated and invested as the District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work and took his place in District Grand Council. The Deputy District Grand Director of Ceremonies called the Companions of the District of Surrey to Order and Ill.Comp. David Thompson was proclaimed as District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work and saluted with five times three.

A total of 24 appointments and promotions in District Grand Rank were announced, the recipients being invested and congratulated by the District Grand Master.

The District Grand Master addressed District Grand Council. During his address he was pleased to present Comp. Ian Clark, Provincial Grand Master of the Mark Province of Surrey, with a donation of £1,000 towards the 2022 Surrey Mark Festival in aid of the Mark Benevolent Fund. Comp. Ian thanked all the members of the District for their kind donation.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The meeting was then called to order and closed in due form with a closing hymn by the Organist, Ill.Comp. Glyn Harvey.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The District Grand Master, the Deputy District Grand Master and the District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work, together with members of the Past Executive, honoured guests and District Officers then left the Temple in procession to the echoing strains of a recessional fanfare.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council After the meeting the Companions of Pride of Surrey Council gathered together for a group photo with one of their members, Ill.Comp. David Thompson, District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The Companions of the District of Surrey and their guests sat down to an excellent Luncheon prepared by the staff at the Croydon Masonic Halls.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council In traditional custom our District Grand Recorder, Ill.Comp. Terry Carpenter, bought a bottle of port for the guests of his table.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The luncheon ended with the District Grand Master proposing a toast to the health of the Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master thanking him for joining us in Surrey.

The Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master responded accordingly saying how much he had enjoyed his visit.

The Annual Meeting of District Grand Council The Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master, the Right Illustrious District Grand Master, the Illustrious Deputy District Grand Master, the Illustrious District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work and other distinguished Companions then retired from the Festive Board.
